A truly delightful mechanical charm from the 1950’s. A miniature version of the children’s toy – unlatch the little catch and out jumps Jack! This particular Jack is enamelled and looks like a friendly little clown or jester. He is spring-loaded and pops up as soon as the latch is released. The very fist Jack-in-the-box toy is said to have been made in the 1500s as a 5th birthday gift for German prince. The clockmaker/inventor was known as Claus. Upon seeing the little prince’s mechanical toy other nobles requested that Claus make more “Devils-in-a-box” toys for their children. Quite clearly they are popular with people of all ages, and have been for centuries. This miniature version will be a constant delight for you and those you meet. Who could fail to be amused by such a satisfying surprise? Manufacture: Modelled in 9ct gold throughout and hallmarked for London, 1955, with makers mark GJ Ld for George Jensen Ltd. The ‘Jack” inside the box is spring loaded and pops up when the lid opens. He’s enamelled in red, white and pale blue and is very sprightly. When closed the charm measures 12mm x 8.9mm x12.4mm. Weighs 3.59 grams. Condition: Excellent vintage condition, ready to be added to your charm bracelet. The jump ring is not soldered closed.
