Sold The impressive technicolor rainbows shifting inside these antique Australian opals with their striking geometric settings, make me feel like I’m looking deep into the eyes of a mythical beast – some kind of reptilian rainbow sprite or weaver of harlequin dreams. Does the magic in this object come from the electric opals or the 130 years it has been keeping company with us mere mortals? This opal trilogy ring was made by early Australian jewellers A. Macrow & Sons of Flinders St, Melbourne in about 1890. Manufacture Modelled in 15ct gold, by Australian jeweller A. Macrow & Sons of Melbourne circa 1890. There is only a skerrick of the 15c stamp visible, the gold purity has been verified by XRF test. A. Macrow & Sons were manufacturing jewellers trading in Sydney from 1891 – 1920ish. Macrow really wanted you to feel confident in your purchase, so much so that they would stamp the inside of their rings “Real Stones” “Guaranteed”. They appear to have neglected to put the Macrow stamp inside this ring – but nobody else did the other funny business so we can be confident it was made by them. The three oval cut Australian opal cabochons are a riot of pinfire colours in direct light. Each opal measures approximately 5mm x 3.7mm. The opals are grain set into geometric shaped settings – a concave rectangle at centre and diamond shapes on each side. The face of the band is covered in fine texture and embellished with small circles and flourishes at the shoulders. The ring is 6.15mm wide at the face, tapering gently to 2.3mm at the back of the band. Sits low on the finger at 2.16mm Weighs 2.19 grams.
