Sold A rare and collectable jewel from the early days of the colony of South Australia, circa 1860. Set with a ruby and two pearls in star settings. The bright rose gold is likely from the Australian goldfields, the style is unmistakably Australian High Colonial – the distinctive crown mark on the inside of the band confirms it. A true time traveller, this ring is in perfect original condition. The three gemstones are grain set into star settings. Stars were very popular motifs during the Victorian Era, and especially so in the Australian colonies. Stars symbolised guidance, wisdom and hope, as well as divine protection and aspiration – it’s not hard to see why folks who had travelled to the other side of the world to start a new life would be drawn to this symbolism. Manufacture Modelled in 18ct gold with early Australian hallmarks to the inside of the band: 18c for 18ct gold and the crown hallmark used by some colonial South Australian jewellers, circa 1860. The absence of a makers mark is unfortunate, but all of the hallmarks are unmistakably early Australian. The gold purity has been verified by XRF test. The three gemstones are grain set into star settings. At the centre is a natural 2.5mm diameter ruby, with wild ocean split seed pearls on either side. The gemstones have been verified as natural by an independent gemologist. The ring measures 8.72mm wide at the face, transitioning at the decorative shoulders to a plain flat shank measuring 3.1mm wide at the back of the band. Sits low on the finger at 1.43mm. Weighs 4.06 grams. Size (Aus/UK) P (US) 7.75 (International) 56 somewhat resizable, please get in touch for a quote or to confirm that it can be sized to your requirements.
