Cozy Gold : Australian Antique Convex Wedding Band in 15ct Gold circa 1900

Sold You can’t find them like this any more. No, seriously! While at first glance this ring appears to be a slightly wider than average plain gold band, it’s the colour of the gold that can’t be replicated. Modelled in 15ct gold which fell out of use in the 1930s, this band is not quite pink enough to be called rose, but much too warm to be called yellow. It’s that unmistakable 15ct gold hue that antiques collectors like myself are wild about. Manufacture Modelled in 15ct rosy gold (not a true rose, but too warm to be yellow gold) and stamped 15ct to the inside of the band, the gold purity has been confirmed by XRF test. As with hundreds of other examples of early Australian jewellery the t in ct is much smaller and floats at the top of the stamp. There are unfortunately no makers marks to give us further clues to its origin or age. Based on the style of hallmark and the shape of the band my best guess is circa 1900, possibly earlier. 15ct gold was officially in use in the UK and colonies between 1850 – 1932. You can find older pieces made in 15ct gold, but they will not have a 15ct stamp (probably no stamp at all). It was phased out in the 1930s in favour of 14ct – at the time the rosiness of 15ct gold was unpopular, with most people preferring white or yellow metals. I think it’s the perfect shade of gold, myself! The band is slightly convex on the outside with the traditional D-shaped profile. It is uniformly 3.8mm wide and 1.4mm thick. Weighs 3.2 grams.
