The look of vintage pearls with a late 20th Century twist. This strand of bright white pearls appear to be midcentury Akoya pearls at first glance, but are really late 20th Century freshwater pearls fastened with a vintage Art Deco clasp. Freshwater pearls are whiter in colour than their saltwater cousins and have a softer lustre. This strand has soft pinkish overtones. Unlike Akoya saltwater pearls where each mollusc will grow one pearl at a time, freshwater pearl molluscs will grow as many as 32 pearls at once. It’s possible that many of the pearls on this necklace literally grew up together. Manufacture: Hand knotted on silk, this strand of 84 semi baroque Chinese freshwater pearls are slightly graduated in size, with the largest 7.13mm diameter pearls at the centre, almost imperceptibly graduating to 5.17mm at the clasp. This pearl strand fastens with a vintage Art Deco Sterling silver pearl clasp set with three paste gems. It is hallmarked 925 to the reverse. The pearls are the classic slightly oblong freshwater pearl shape. They have a soft, even lustre and a slight pinkish overtone. They have been confirmed as cultured Chinese freshwater pearls by specialist pearl laboratory GSL. The strand is princess length at 51cm / 20″. Weighs 19.05 grams. Condition: Very good pre-loved condition. No faults to note.
