Otherworldly Delight : Victorian Era Etruscan Revival Crescent Moon & Star Bangle in 15ct and 9ct Gold

♥Sold♥ A Victorian Era hinged bangle in solid gold, with a combination of Celestial and Etruscan/Archeological Revival motifs, circa 1880. This magical piece of antique jewellery is replete with hidden meanings that the Victorians were so fond of. “I love you to the moon and back” is the sentiment in this beautifully crafted antique jewel. Celestial themed jewels have always been popular, but were especially so during the late Victorian and the Edwardian eras. Tokens featuring a crescent moon were often given by a groom to his bride as a honeymoon gift, the new moon representing the beginning of their life together. The star symbolises divine guidance: a bright star to lead the way. The Etruscan elements combined with celestial motifs are an unusual arrangement I have not seen before, perhaps this piece was commissioned for someone with an interest in Classical Art and Architecture, as many people were fascinated by the archeological discoveries in Italy and Greece in the 1800s. The gemstones have their own secret language, too. Opals are the birthstone for October and Garnet for January – which may have been a combination of the birthstones of the bride and groom – alternatively garnets are believed to promote courage and steadfastness, and opals symbolised hope, purity and truth. Manufacture: The moon and star and Etruscan details are modelled in 15ct gold, with the hinged bangle in 9ct gold. There are no hallmarks present, the gold content has been verified by XRF test. The combination of gold carats is unusual in modern jewellery, but more common when this piece was made. The 9ct was selected for its durability, the 15ct for its malleability. Visually the sections are well matched in colour – I had no idea there was a combination of gold finesses until I had the piece tested. The moon is set with 5 solid Australian opals which graduate in size. They are bright and dazzling with an array of colours. The star is set with a natural deep red garnet. All gemstones have been verified as natural by an independent gemologist. The bangle is oval shaped, and opens with a hinge, closes with a tongue and groove clasp secured with a safety chain. Weighs 10.72 grams. Size: The bangle is an oval shape, designed so that it won’t spin on the wrist. The maximum inside diameter is 62mm and the circumference is 18cm (7 1/8″). Condition: Excellent antique condition. The bangle opens and closes smoothly and securely. Ready for immediate wear.
