Toothypegs : Antique “British Raj” Era Carnivore Tooth Pendant in 18ct Gold circa 1900

Both fascinating and repulsive, this pearly white incisor from a young African “Big Game” animal is a relic from a very different period of time. In consultation with someone knowledgeable in this area I have learnt that it is unlikely to be a hunting trophy as it’s from a young animal – more likely a found item transformed into a talisman. The cap on the tooth is made of solid 9ct gold, that lack of engraved ornamentation suggests turn of the 20th century manufacture as earlier examples are almost always heavily engraved. Wear it as part of your collection of apotropaic magical talismans for strength, fierceness and perhaps a little vulnerability. Manufacture:  A 18ct gold cap with a serrated edge tops this curved antique animal tooth. There are no hallmarks present, the metal fineness has been verified by XRF test. Originally a stick pin, I have added a large 9ct jump ring to allow it to be worn as a pendant. The pendant measures 31.22mm (not including the jump ring) x 10.5mm x 10mm. Weighs 2 grams. Condition:  Excellent antique condition. Under magnification you can see a tiny chip to the pointy end of the tooth, but this can hardly be considered to be a flaw.
