$50.93
Dating to the turn of the 20th Century, this unusual and versatile pendant/brooch was made by early Australian jewellers Willis and Sons of Melbourne. Their hallmark of a unicorn’s head can be found on the reverse. A joyful piece to wear, and a desirable item for any collector of Australian antique jewellery. Manufacture: Modelled in 10ct gold by early Australian jewellers Willis and Sons of Melbourne, their hallmark of a unicorn’s head can be found on the reverse. The fineness mark absent, but the piece tests as 10ct throughout, with the exception of the pin which is steel. 10ct gold was not a gold standard in use in the early 1900s, so it is likely this piece is made in 9ct gold and heavily gilded in 15ct. It certainly has the appearance of 15ct gold. The central heart with its outline of wild split seed pearls is raised in a coronet setting, with an addional bezel set pearl in the centre. The heart shape is repeated by a rail of gold, embellished with golden circles, diamond shapes and a star sitting on top of the central heart. Each of these elements is set with a seed pearl. The outside endge of the heart shape is further embellished with arabesque swirls with fine milgrain detail. The pearls are all original well matched in hue. They have retained their full coat of nacre. The piece has a hidden loop at the back allowing it to be worn as a pendant, and brooch fittings for wear as a brooch. Measures 33.39mm x 29.2mm x 6.04mm (not including the pin or clasp). Weighs 3.09 grams Condition: In excellent antique all original condition. No faults to note.
