Open Hearted : Early Australian Crowned Heart Open Locket by Johnson and Simonsen in 9ct Gold

$51.27
A late Victorian Era treasure, made in Australia by early Australian jewellers Johnson and Simonsen. This double sided locket is open on both sides, designed to hold two photographs. The rayed design is a variation of a crowned heart; six golden Fleur-de-lis radiate out of the heart forming an unusual crown effect. Crowned hearts are said to symbolise that the wearer is the ruler (or Queen) of the giver’s heart. It is also symbolic of fidelity and loyalty. The original albumen photographs are preserved inside this antique locket, they appear to be of a young couple, the lady with some beautiful jewellery in her hair and at her throat. Lockets were popular gifts for newlyweds – this may have been a gift from our handsome young chap to his bride. They are hiding behind the new paper inserts I have popped in, but can be removed when you add your own dear hearts if you wish. The locket was missing the clear celluloid covers, but I have cut new ones to keep your photos safe. *please note this listing is for the locket only, the chain pictured is for styling purposes only. Manufacture: Modelled in 9ct yellow gold and hallmarked to the reverse with early Australian hallmarks including the “Square and Compass” mark used by Melbourne jewellers Johnson and Simonsen from 1895 – 1914. The heart shaped frame is surrounded by six fleur de lis rays forming a crown. Each of the six rays is set with a natural seed pearl, all of which appear to be original, they are well matched and have a full coat of lustre. The locket measures 37mm (not including the bail) x 31mm x 2.76mm. Weighs 2.26 grams. Condition: In outstanding antique condition with no faults to note. Ready for immediate and everyday wear.
